Just trying to get a few tips on replacing some bearings in a "new" lathe. I just picked up a Delta 1440 from a fellow woodturner (he upgraded to a powermatic). Now when I bought it I knew that the lathe had been used, and used well (not abused, hopefully). I started cleaning up the lathe prior to first use and noticed what appeard to be a broken washer or retaining ring (couldn't tell which one as the part was extreamly worn). I believe this broken part is the cause of the vibration in the HS. Now, since I have no idea how long this has been this way, I figure I should go on and replace the bearings in the HS and possibly on the reeves drive.

My question is, has anybody done this and what is the level of difficulty. I have replaced the bearings in my TS motor before so I have some limited experiance.

Thanks for any input.
P.S. I paid $200 for the lathe, and even if I replace all the bearings and retaing rings that will add about $50.00 to my cost of the lathe :D
