Went by woodcraft on Friday to pick up a drill bit and a few acrylic blanks. I happened to pick up a bag of there mixed wood pen blanks, the $19 one's. I usaually don't look at them because in my opinion there's maybe one or two good blanks in the bag. I noticed a piece of amboyna burl....then another, and another. I quit looking after 4 because the bag just paid for itself. When I got it home, I end up with 6 plus a 4" peice of snakewood and a couple real nice black & white ebony. I learned to look a little closer and not be so judgemental on cheap bag of pen blanks. You never know unless you look

Congrats! However, I would note that your experience is not typical. I think the stores use cut-offs and make their own bags. I've gotten a few when I first started, and I mostly got purpleheart, zebrawood, yellowheart, maple, walnut (not figured), and a few others. But nothing spectacular...
