PR pouring question

I'm interested in PR casting and will be trying as soon as the budget allows. I see some of you pouring in cylindrical ice trays or pipe molds but most of the pictures look like single color casts. Is that true or do you pour a nice swirly mixture as well? And how well does the swirl hold up after a pour like that? I understand you can't control the swirl as well as in an open mold but I like the idea of minimizing the waste. Thanks!

I've done combo pours, and Ed Davidson has really taken it to the next level. Check out some of his most recent pens to see how that looks. You don't get ribbons of color, but rather somethink akin to a burl-like appearance, or the way creamer looks in coffee right after it's poured in. Depending on how long you wait, you can get varying degrees of deliniation, too. Here are two pens I did from homebrew castings. Both are single-tube castings:
