Custom cap finial turned

Tom, I turn a piece to 3/4" and put it in my Beall chuck. Then I turn about 1/2" of it to the proper diameter, shape the end, finish and part off what I need. You could use a Jacobs chuck or drill a hole and use a pin chuck. You could use a spur and a live center but then you'd have the little dimple to deal with.

Tom, I glued the scrap piece let over from to the head of a screw then mounted it in a drill chuck. I only had about 3/4 of an inch left over from the rest of the pen but it was just enough. The nice thing about the screw was that the head was a perfect fit for the finial. I used it as a bushing to gauge my progress as I turned it. Once it was the correct size I finished the end and sides. Parted the finial off and spent what seemed like forever looking all over my bench for the little tiny piece that flew off. Once found, glued it in place and posted a picture to brag. Hope this helps. I may take some pictures of the process with the next pen.
