This was an experiment and did not work as well as we wished. We used horse hair on the top, from one of his wife's favorite horses. Issues:

Horse hair is like spring steel
Horse hair has no memory and springs back to the original straight line.
Won't crimp.

So wrapping it around a rod was difficult. We used medium CA to embed it and wished we could use Alumilite.
We need to clean up the ends and shape it a little better.
Tonight we do research on how to bend horse hair.

Here is my suggestion.
Using a blank turned to size,
Cut a couple of grooves in the top blank and wrap the hair around the groove. You would be using the horse hair more as an accent. This may work with a leather glue up as well.

Hair is similar to bone. If you soak a chicken leg bone in vinegar for about 1 week, it is flexable enough to tie it into a knot. Try soaking overnight. Once dry the bone retains its shape. The hair may also. Just a guess. I have never tried it.
