General Information

The buckeye is a genus of trees with about 10 species native to North America and about 15 species native to Europe. In Great Britain a relative of the Buckeye is known as the horse chestnut. Buckeyes grow throughout the states east of the Rocky Mountains. They are named after their nut, which is dark brown and rounded with a lighter spot on one side.

Buckeye burl is a popular pen blank. A number of suppliers offer stabilized buckeye burl blanks in various colors.

Turning Buckeye

Buckeye, especially the burl is a very soft wood. It is extremely challanging to turn unless it has been stabilized.
