General Information[edit]

There are a number of types of maple.

The wood from maple can range from fairly soft to very hard and dense. It is very light colored. Because of its light color maple is often used as a contrasting wood against a darker wood in an inlay?.

The light color offers a challenge to the penturner as the metal that is removed from the bushings at the end of the pen barrel in the sanding process can stain the wood.

Maple can have very interesting grain and figure.

Turning Maple[edit]

Maple can vary considerably in its ability to turn. 'Rock' or hard maple can be a very hard wood, while sugar or silver maple can be almost as soft as pine.
