My local Rockler got some 10 packs of stabilized, dyed blanks. They convinced me to buy some. They were having a hard time selling them so I made a Fat Black Titanium Cigar out of one of the blanks so they could show how a pen might look. Then I told the boss he could keep the pen after they use it to help sell the 10 packs.

It is deep green... good St. Patrick's Day color. I made it very fat both to have more wood showing and because fat is good!! The pen is done my normal way but with an extra coat of CA.

Unfortunately, I lost a nice very spalty blank before this one. Part of the wood just sloughed off during sanding. It happened twice and that killed the blank which was down to the bushings. My conclusion was that the stabilization on these blanks wasn't that hot. So I selected a blank with less spalting and greater strength.

Interesting. Personally, the 'fat' effect is not to my liking.

Quite frankly I agree. They feel cool to write with but they are a little bit gaudy. The guy who is getting it is "portly" so it is suitable to the purpose.
