I think that prize donations from members will really pick up when the Bash is announced in the general forum. Seems to me that Jeff should be the one to make the first official announcement regarding the Bash. When should we have him do it?

Andrew,
Have you pinged Ernie at Beartooth Woods? I know he had a death in the family recently, but he has been a regular donator for the past two years. I won a GC from him three years ago and that was what got me started doing Acrylics.... Can I assist in contacting him if you haven't?

Hi Andrew,

Why not start by making up a list of suppliers you'd like to have contacted, and posting it here. Then we can suggest additions (or subtractions), and also some of us who may do more business with certain suppliers might volunteer to contact them.

Jeff usually does up a letter about the IAP, it's purpose, membership and visitorship. Important stats, such as how many hits each month. He has also offered in the past to create a page listing contact information for vendors who contribute to the Birthday Bash. Since we don't advertise, this is as close as we come to promoting some vendors. This is a handy thing to attach to an E-Mail to your favorite supplier when hitting them up for gifts!

Scott.

Andrew, you should be able to edit your original post indefinitely. Can you? If not, then I'll make you a mod in this forum so you can.

I wonder if the economy is affecting vendor participation...

Scott, do you have the letter I did last year? I can't find the silly thing. I can update the traffic numbers.

Yes, I can edit it! That'll help immensely.

I think the timing (just before Christmas) and the economy might be playing a part...it took a while to solicit last year, so I have high hopes for January when there'll be more people in offices...

I should have that letter too, but I cannot find it yet...It's on here somewhere...

Andrew

Can you reserve some of these prizes for me for the donation drawing?

For starters, how about

1 of the packs of Inlace Acrylester blanks from Woodturningz.
A few of the Stars & Stripe inlay Kits from Constant Laubscher

You could note "DD" in red with a quantity next to them in the listing to indicate this if you agree.

Generally, I like to have some pretty high value items in that drawing and I'd like to have to buy as few as possible!

Andrew - here is the letter we used last year, updated with recent numbers. Use as-is or modify to suit your needs when approaching vendors.

The International Association of Penturners (IAP) will be celebrating its fifth-year anniversary during the month of February 2009. In five years, we've grown to over 6500 members, most of whom are active pen makers. Many of our members have related hobbies in woodturning and general woodworking.

Our anniversary celebration will include door prizes, contests, and other events. We are inviting you to donate items you feel appropriate for our membership, all of which will be used as prizes for our various events. Items may include tools, penturning kits and supplies, pen blanks, gift certificates, etc. You may also wish to offer some type of sale or discount to our members who purchase from you during our anniversary celebration.

We are a member-supported organization, and we have never accepted paid advertising. However, a list of all donors, with their respective website links will be posted on our front page for the one-month duration of the event. There is no minimum or suggested total value for your donation, we ask only that your donation reflect the value you perceive of having your company name and web link on our front page.

We have an extremely popular and busy web site that is in the Google top 10 for many terms related to penturning. During the average week, we have 75,000 visitors and serve up 500,000 page views. Over 1500 of our members visit every week, and our discussion forum has nearly half a million posts.

Hey Andrew,
Not sure if this is where you want it posted or not, but put me down for a USPS flat rate box full of blanks as a prize as well. You can use them anywhere you want. I think they were used in the daily trivia area last year. I'm going to try to get some more corn cobs done so I can put some of those in the box as well.

Hey Andrew,
Is there anyway we can get this thread "Sticky" or whatever they call it with this software so it will be at the top of the Bash Forum all of the time?
Maybe we can do the Bash Calendar post as well?

How encouraging! What was it that Charles Beard once said????

That's by far my favourite quote, Al...I did a 'quote of the day' - thought of the day response activity with my grade 10 English class a few years ago in which I'd post a quote or thought, and they'd write a response to it while I did attendance and got organized for my lesson...that quote I found struck a chord with both me and quite a few others in the class...

Hi Andrew,

I heard back from Klingspor, and they are donating one of their large bargain-boxes of gold sandpaper. We will specify the finer grits when we notify them. I use a lot of the gold sandpaper, and I love it!

I've gotten a response from Craft Supplies, but they're still working on what they will donate. But Rex also offered some items donated by himself and Kip Christensen, probably DVD's. They will get back to me!

Put me in for a flat rate envelope full of premium blanks from my private stash. I'll give details later of what they are.

I didn't even know that you are looking for donations already!

I spoke with Mike at Alumilite today. Here is what they are donating:

6 28 oz. casting kits. Winner's choice of black, white, or clear. Give out as 6 prizes. He is also getting me a code and I will post an announcement for him in the Business Classifieds offering a % off all orders for the month of February in honor of the IAP 5th Anniversary.

He is also donating the starter kit that I will include in my IAP Edition Pressure Pot and Casting Starter Set I donated.
