I have a MT1 lathe for pen making etc......and wanted to try a bowl.
glued two 2x6 pine together.
put a small 1/2 oak disk in-between so I wouldn't hit my plate and every time I hit a small hard spot in the pine...the wood jumps and I found it comes loose and out of balance. What are the plates called as I need to order smaller plates like a 2" and 3".......the disk inbeween is working very well.

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance. Ray

Could you share some pictures of your setup? Being able to see it rather than imagine it might help bring some suggestions.

Looks like Ed has already answered your question about the faceplate. I'm quite curious about the issues you're having. In my humble experience with bowls, it was commonly the distance of my tool rest or my approach with the chisel, sometimes it was my choice of chisel that caused similar issues. Typically though it was when I was chucked up. I've never had an issue like you describe when using a faceplate.
