I have a few live oak blanks (somewhere) that I got last spring from a tree at my mother-in-law's place in south MS. They were taken from gnarly dead branches that were still on the tree. That is the color and grain pattern that I have from those. I cut the branch at a point where the dead started but still some living wood. The living wood was brighter but the dead wood was darker like that.

Swamp Oak can refer to any number of different species of oak, Swamp White Oak, Swamp Red Oak, Swamp Chestnut Oak, but there is not one "Swamp Oak" species.

The wood is most likely from the red oak family judging by the length of the rays so it could be live oak, willow oak, pin oak or any of the other innumerable species.

I think the color and the unusual grain pattern exclude plain bog oak. Brown English Oak is lighter than bog oak, and has more of the irregular grain pattern. But, it's related to bog oak.

The only reference I have access to is "The Real Wood Bible, The complete illustrated guide to choosing and using 100 decorative woods." by Nick Gibbs. It's very handy.
