Maybe we need a forum just for "Guess This Wood".

Here's my entry. Not the prettiest stuff, but it's by request for a relative. It's dense and oily.

Pine heart wood by any chance? I made some slimlines out of pine boards from my grandfather's barn. Wasn't sure if I was making pens or firestarters! :)

It looks like OAK to me. I never thought of Oak as being oily though. I can identify the kit; do I win anything for that? Can we ask for clues? Is it domestic to North America? Maybe it's poplar, or birch.

It's native to the Caribbean and South America. It's an evergreen. There are some greenish streaks which are not too visible in the photo.

Nope, not Cedar. Much heavier! It's Lignum Vitae.
A few interesting facts here: http://www.lignum-vitae.com/page3.html

I would have never guessed that. After you filled us in, I did a search on that wood and found a cool wood website. http://www.cocoboloinc.com/index.html#home[8D]
