Since it doesn't seem like a good idea to put an 8" wheel on my 6" grinder can someone recommend what type wheel I need for sharpening tools. I have the original wheel on my grinder and it is really coarse.

I have an 80 grit gray generic wheel and a 120 grit white Norton wheel on mine. I find the 120 to be too coarse sometimes too though.

The most economical friable grinding wheels for sharpening HSS and more expensive turning tool steels are white and pink wheels. Have used both colors they got the job done. Advertizing hype may claim one better than the other, but saw no difference. I cannot buy a friable grinding wheel in my town so all purchases mailorder.

My last purchase of white wheels, found these folks had the best price with shipping. I shop sales Hartville runs more sales than Sharpening supplies.

My last purchase of Blue K wheels harder than white or pink wheels came from these folks.

I run a medium 46 K wheel for changing bevel angle or repairing damage to tool. For routine sharpening an 80 grit fine K wheel gets the job done for me. Some folks prefer to use 100, 120, or 150 grit fine wheels of any color.

Wheels should slide on the shaft without force, and only hand tighten the nut.
