I just made this fiddleback mahogany one and I was quite surprised with the grain of the wood. The picture doesn't do it justice but it's the best I could get it.
I've made quite a few slimlines now. Guess it's time for this rookie to get adventurous and try some different styles. I think this wood will look great in a larger diameter pen.

Thanks Guys;

Charlie. I bought a dozen blanks so I'm stuck with the grain orientation. But whenever I make my own blanks , I agree, from what I have read , that cutting them on an angle is well worth the slight wood loss by doing so.
