The familiar sound of the "Brain Fart"??

So i was making a pen last night for a friend out of some very old African Blackwood.
Turns well, has good grain and is going to look fantastic!
Stopped after work to pick up some MinWax to finish it off and to try this tutorial.
Very excited and in the groove!
And then it happened...
Let's just put a touch of mineral oil on the wood to see what it is going to look like...
Looked amazing, deep, dark brown with wraith like black veins writhing around the pen. Awesome, he is going to love it!

Wipe off the oil and apply the MinWax...
Wake up this morning and pen is still tacky!!

Note to self: Oil and polyurethane do not mix...

Will try and sand it down a bit more and reapply the varnish and see what happens!

I really sometimes hate the learning process!

You might try wiping the blank down with either Lacquer thinner or Acetone , then just a slight sanding, since the oil has had some time to prenetrate, the solvents will leach out most of the oil for you.
