I drilled some blanks for some 7mm comfort grip pens. Before I glue in the tubes, should I cut one blank short - to the length of the tube minus the rubber grip?

No you do this when mounted on the mandrel or between centres. Here are some instructions

A short note on the comfort grips. I never put them on my pens any more. The minute you touch them or get any dust on them, they turn dull and gray. I haven't found anything that will keep them clean. I also prefer to turn the full blank. Just my style. Jim S

I am about the same as Jim except I do still use them if I am saving a blank because it blows up. Save the rubber grips for this purpose.

You can do it either way. I've done both and they work equally fine.
Agreed, I usually turn off the excess with a parting tool but you can eliminate the wood first

hmmm I think what I will do is leave the blank full length but no glue on the part that will get turned off. Then I can turn the rest and just part off the piece where the grip is. I have done 1 other one before this - it was a save. I didn't have problems with dust on the grip, I did all the turning and finishing, then added the grip later.
Well try to add the grip about a hundred or so miles from any dust because they attract dust like honey attracts flys.

Yeah, I don't use them anymore either. With it out, I'm able to show more of the blank.
