I have a talon chuck. I use it on my Jet 1642. I do peppermills and I start with blanks the are 3 - 3 1/2 square. I turn that down between center till I get it round and then I put a tenon on each end...make sure the tenon is small enough to fit your chuck.

I recently made a peppermill on my a midi lathe at my local club.

you'll likely need a bed extension if you plan on doing the drilling of it on the lathe.

I made jam chucks to turn mine. I used a caliper to measure the size each end and them made a jam chuck to fit and it worked fine. One set for the top and one for the bottom. Made them out of maple since it is real stable and I reuse over and over. Johnny CNC also sells a set for one kind of mechanism, not the ceramic.
