A guy I work with commissioned me to make a pen from the antler of the first Whitetail his grandson got. He wanted to have it mounted but his deadeye grandson shot the poor critter in the head.

Hope you like it.

This stuff is very hard and stinks badly when turned.

Sanded to 600
2 coats of BLO
4 coats of Crystal coat
2 coats of TSW
buffed with a paper towel

The picture does not do this pen justice. I'm really happy with it

Very nice work. I tried antler one time. The drilling was bad enough, worst smelling stuff I ever saw. I started turning the blanks then tossed them. I just couldn't handle the odor....took all the enjoyment out of turning.

Nice job. I have never turned antler before, will try it tho. So I'll wait for warmer weather and do it outside.

NICe pen and coloring in the antler.
If you have any mm you oughto give it a try.
Winds up looking like ivory.
What the purpose for the BLO?
Out of curiosity.
I guess using my D.C. I never have a problem with any odors and I turn a lot of antler.

Not sure if the BLO was a help but it seemed to enhance the colors somewhat.
