Most pens are turned on a wood lathe.

When beginning to turn, remember A-B-C!

Anchor - your tool to the tool rest.  Never left your tool off the tool rest.

Bevel - rub the bevel of the tool against the the turning.  Retract the tool tip and lower the handle position until the tool just begins cutting.

Cut -  Lower the tool handle to cut more aggressively. Place your fingers on the near side of the tool rest and use it to guide the tool across the cut.

Make cuts from the center of the blank outward toward the ends.
