Turning Antler

Drilling
Drilling antler can be a challenge because of the curvature of the antler. Various methods exist for dealing with this:
- turning the antler to a round shape before drilling - mount the antler on the lathe between centers and rough it to a round shape that can be held in vise on a drill press, or in a chuck on the lathe.
- drilling the antler 'freehand' on the lathe. IAP member jrc has posted the following u-tube video that provides a technique: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAEEaF8z2jM
- straightening antler- some IAP members report success in straightening antler by boiling for 20 to 30 minutes, then clamping it is a shop vise to straighten it.
