Sassafras

General information

Sassafras grows in the southern regions of the United States. When turned it emits an odor that can be described as 'medicinal'. An extract of sassafras is used to flavor candies and beverages. It has several other uses and characteristics, some of which have led to ban on use in foodstuffs by the FDA.

Turning Sassafras

Sassafras is a soft wood with very little contrast to the grain. When working the wood there will be a noticeable smell of licorice or root beer.
