Title IAP Collection Pen #8
Description Civil War Bullet Pen with Hexagonal Bocote Blank by James Schumacher
Date Added to Collection Aug 6, 2014
Maker James Schumacher
Materials Crosscut Bocote Blank
Components Gun Metal Civil War Replica Bullet Pen
Tools / Machinery Used Lathe not used. Tools: 4 x 3/8 bolt; 3/8 nuts (2); bench top disk sander
Process I cross cut a Bocote board into a blank, drilled the blank to accept the bolt. The bolt head was placed in a vise and a flat of the blank was lined up with a flat on the bolt head. The first nut was added and tightened to also line up with the bolt head and blank flat. The second nut was added to also line up with the flats. Take the assembly to a disk sander and sand down the corners until you reach the flats. Now sand each of the six sides to obtain your near perfect hexagon. Insert and glue in your tube, do a little finish sanding to remove any marks and to level out any unevenness. I applied 8 coats of thick CA, sanded to 1200 grit, and hand rubbed a coat of One-Step Plastic Polish.
Maker's Comments I could have made this hexagon shaped pen on one of my indexing lathes equipped with a trimming router, but the objective was to show newer turners that this can be done with the minimal amount of tools you have on hand.
