I've spotted a few acronyms and terminology which I thought I understood, but which is used differently around here. Forgive me if someone's already done this (I can't find it), or sticky me if not!

I had no clue what CA was and it was a good few hours browsing before I realised you guys were talking about superglue. And what the heck is MMing? Is it even legal?

Lastly, I know what DC is in terms of electricity, but in what way is it comparable to "masking"?

Let's keep a list!! Here we go:

CA glue - Cyanoacrylate
Finial - Is that the pointy bit, or the knobby bit on the end?
MM - ?
MT 1, MT2, etc. - types of taper used in turning machines
PC - Polymer Clay
PR - Polyester Resin
T/N - ?
VS - ?

Finial- Often the colored part that is often replaced on a JR. Gent and such. See the following article.

http://content.penturners.org/articles/2008/custom_finial.pdf

MM- Micromesh. Sandpaper that runs up to 12,000 grit. I get mine here.

T/N- Titanium nitride. Looks like gold hardware but is more durable.
VS- Variable speed on a lathe. Kind of self-explanatory.
MMing- The act of sanding with micromesh. See above.
DC- Most of the time people are talking about a dust collector. I got mine at rockler.

Most other acronyms can be found here.

You are correct on all the acryonyms you listed.

Hope this helps!

Ah. It seems it's just a piece of furniture. It could refer to the pointy end or the knobby end. I need a good name for the pointy end of a ball pen, where the writing implement protrudes!

"DNA." Heh heh. I LOLd. that's a good one! Seems sort of affectionate, or something!

Hope this helps!

It sure does. This thread's ready to be deleted now!

simply put!

Quite simply, you should be MMing your pens as a final step for your CA finish, but make certain your DC is running to remove the fumes. Also turn down your VS, which in conjunction with your DC flow will keep the temp down.

Got it???

Ken and Randy, thank you! I checked the link we've been using for new members to get acronyms info and found it didn't work. This is great!

Maybe Ed can add the meaning of "WEPHPFI."

And to you, Ken, welcome! Your work is quite beautiful. I expect to see more great things down the road. Our "newbie" links are as follows:
The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42446

Another link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link on some of the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.
