This is to give the local chapters as early a warning as possible for the Chapter Collaboration Contest.

The Contest Master for this contest is Dario. Any questions, suggestions, and comments as to this contest should be directed by PM to Dario.

Please read and follow the rules for this contest, and GOOD LUCK!

CHAPTER COLLABORATION CONTEST RULES

1. This is a "Chapter Collaboration Contest" (3C'S) and as such, only IAP chapters can join/compete. Other members are encouraged to form new local IAP chapters so they can participate.

2. What makes an entry "collaborative"? This is by honor system. Since some clubs/chapters are small...
...a minimum of 2 physically involved in the creation of the entry will be required.
It is strongly encouraged to get as many club members to participate as much as possible. Participation doesn't have to be physical; it could be sharing of ideas, design elements, etc. For example, a new/innovative cast blank can be one member's contribution to the collaboration.
.
3. Entry could be any writing instrument. Any kit can be used or it can be kit-less. It can be a pen, a boxed pen, or a desk set. Use your imagination; use anything but only the kit can be pre-fabricated. (Make your own box.)

4. Judging will be by un-retouched (cropped okay) photos sent to William Cavanaugh, wdcav1952. (Please request email address by PM.) A minimum of 4 photos are required. Photos must show the entirety (all sides) of the pen clearly. The photos will be sent to the judges as anonymous entries.
Photos must be big enough to show the pen...preferably bigger than actual size.
Photo quality & presentation will be given consideration by the judges.
NO identifying logo, name, etc. will be allowed to be seen on the entry. Not following this rule will result in disqualification of the entry.

5. Entry submission deadline is 12:00 midnight Eastern Time Monday, February 23 via email to William.

6. Winners will be selected by a panel of highly respected, but anonymous, judges.

7. Winners will be announced on Thursday, Feb. 26.

Question .... suppose a "good friend" of mine has been kicked out of his local IAP chapter. Well, maybe not kicked out as much as this friend of mine was told that the meeting was canceled when, in fact, they actually held the meeting and didn't want him to know about it.

So now, this "good friend" of mine doesn't have a club to collaborate with. And suppose my "good friend" has a dual personality. Well, okay ... maybe not a dual personality ..... more like a tri-personality, if you get my drift. Can the three of them, actually just my friend, collaborate together on a pen??

My "friend" is a little confused ..... they're anxiously awaiting your ruling.

Incidentally, all three of them are LSU fans.

Now Doc I do believe I know your good friend. I also believe if your good friend did have tri-personality, your friend still would not have a friend. Therefore your friend would still just be one of the friends because the other 2 don't want to associate with him that is why they hide when he is around.

Confused? So is your good friend.

Some Clarification Questions ...

I noted that the honor system is to be employed, which means people should follow the rules as best they understand them. So I'd like to ask some questions, just to be clear on a couple of points.

[Please note: This is purely illustrative, I don't mean to imply any IAP member would intentionally act inappropriately, I simply want to make sure we (at least me) understand the contest.]

Consider this scenario: Our group meets (for the first time) and decides "Yeah, lets enter that contest!'', and then decides "Yeah, let Bubba make the pen because he's really good at it." Bubba then pulls out an absolutely fantastic pen that he made 3 months ago (he still has it because it's so good it's priced at over $1,000 and he can't find a buyer). Bubba also had a nice box and nice photographs of his fantastic pen.

Strike 1 - The Participation - I don't think there was enough 'group think' in this story. It would be better if there were a real discussion on what kit to use, what material, color, finish, etc.

Strike 2 - The Work - Only Bubba did the work. It would have been better if one person worked on the pen blank, another the box, another the turning and finish, another on the photograph, etc.

Strike 3 - The Construction - I don't think Bubba should have used an already completed pen. I think there's an implied assumption in the original contest description that a new pen would be created. The purpose of 'Strike 3' is to make it an explicit statement rather than an assumption.

Does all this sound right? (If not ... that is, if I'm just generating confusion, let me know and I'll delete this posting.)

When our pen is completed, do we just send in the 4 pictures? Or should we also send in a description of who participated (if not names, at least a count)? [This, I supposed, is where the honor part comes in.]

J_B,

You are correct on all counts and everyone is encouraged to stay within the parameters set. That said, there is no real way we can police anyone. We really have to trust all participants to follow the rules.

Your suggestion to give credit to members who shared effort and ideas is definitely worth looking at. I will say for certain that it is a welcome addition to any entry. Just make sure it is on the email and not on the pictures.

I will confer with other bash coordinators and see if we need to make it mandatory.

Another item I am planning on adding is the addition of a short narrative pointing out what makes the entry pen special.

The real goal of this contest is to encourage new ideas, coordination, communication, team work, etc. among the chapter members. It is suppose to be fun and the prize (and bragging rights ) that comes with winning is secondary.

Thank you.

Al,

I agree your friend is confused.

Please extend my apologies to "them" but there has to be at least 2 distinct persons working on the entry pen. Should I clarify that more on the rules?

Entries also have to be from a recognized IAP chapter...unless your friend can form a local chapter it cannot be accepted.

Now tell your friend to confer with himself and send me a PM if he has more questions.

Thank you,
