Just wondering if anyone here might be able to tell me what type of woods these are.
Thank you for your thoughts.

1) I made a pen from the blank on top, the lighter one. I believe it is some type of burl. I'll try to get a picture of it tomorrow and post it.

2) This tree came from a friends house in New Orleans.

3)These are planks that I got from a pallet from Lowes.

#1--- amboyna with sapwood/heartwood. A very nice blank!

#2--- not maple--- I'm pretty sure it's sweetgum. Can be a very nice wood but it will tend to crack on you badly if you dry it too fast.

#3--- Poplar--- with mineral streaks. If you cut it and the black parts stink like body odor, it's definitely poplar, very common for use in pallets. Also too much on the soft side for my taste.

#1 - Amboyna
#2 - Sugar Maple, leaves are not pointy enough for sweet gum, though I'm surprised it's from that far south.
#3 - Poplar, thoughthe bottm two look like they could be birch and pine.
