What do you want to see for demos

We are looking for suggestions for demos that you would like to see. What do you want to knsow. then we can sucker- err volunteer someone.

Alton, if I bring some curly maple, would you want to bring your own colorings
to show how you dye your blanks? I know you've done it before, but that one
bears repeating. And since you seem to have been touched by the gods when
it comes to CA, I wouldn't mind watching another demo of that. I'll bring the
materials..

Does anyone make their own blank squaring jigs? A little show-and-tell might help
out other members. Seeing them firsthand is different than reading about them.

More ideas, anyone?

I have made pendants, and have made up an easy pendant turning backing plate that I could bring along and demo.

I would be interested in a sharpening demo as scary sharp is recommended all the time. I have the Wolverine system but not sure how other sharpen and touch up between trips to the grinder.

I agree with all these.
Also does I have not done a closed end pen yet and wouldn't mind seeing a closed end pen don with the closed end mandrel to see the benifits of each.
I am always willing to see how someone else sharpens their tools.

I have a Work Sharp .. I could bring that if anyone is interested.

I've never understood why anyone would recommend 'Scary Sharp' for turning
tools, though. Once you touch that edge to spinning wood, isn't the edge pretty
much gone? Sharp, yes. Scary? I don't see what good it would do unless you've
already turned to just about final dimensions.. in which case a 100 grit skew would
probably work better with less chance of catching..

But what do I know? I still can't use a skew..

It all depends on your goal...

Are you trying to make the open grain wood appear close grain to the point where you get a glass like finish, or is your goal to somewhat reduce the magnitude of the open grain look or perhaps simply to do a finish that seals it as it without disturbing the open grain look?

Each of these approaches can look nice depending on the look you are trying to achieve.

Since my last corispondance I am looking to go both ways the glase smothe finish and to just fill the voides. I have ben succeful in filling tears and small imperfections in some turnings using the dust fron sanding and jel type contact glue. By the way when and ware is the next meeting?

We meet at the West Springfield Woodcraft store. I think it is in two weeks.

I forget the time .. I just drive and hope I'm not late.

I'll bring a few products with me .. a clear grain filler, a sanding sealer and some CA.
Maybe I'll mix up some shellac as a wash coat.. that can help the end grain stand
up straight and firm so it gets cut off more cleanly.
I'm also bringing a sharpener so we can see how that helps.

Yeah, about that.....If anyone takes a couple of minutes and looks at the officers area they might have noticed the post about the president not sure if he was going to make the meeting this month. It's looking more and more like I am not going to be there but things tend to change at the last second sometimes.I have no doubt that the rest of the elected officers can handle a meeting without my presence. If there is anything that needs my attention, call me or send me an email and we will figure it out.

I don't know that it's so important to have the
proper taps for a demo .. any tap in the right size range would do,
wouldn't it?

They will work as long as you have the matching tap and dies and aren't trying to mate them up to existing pieces.
