Yesterday I was at Bad Dog Burls http://www.burlsource.com/ for a group visit with the turning club I belong to (Central New England Woodturners).
I spoke with Rob, and asked him about the possibility of having a group visit to his place. He politely thanked my and enthusiastically said sure.

So my thought is to set up a visit to his place in lieu of maybe the March meeting. Or it could be in an off month, or even on just a different weekend if you guys want.

a. Would this be of interest to any of you?
b. How would you like it to be handled if you are interested?

Jerry
p.s. No Neil, Charlie, Alton, Steve, or Eric, I am not trying to take a job away, just a thought on something different. This is what I do for the other club.

I've had bad luck so far with Bad Dog Burls, I had conflicts that prevented me from joining three group trips to this place, so would look forward to having another chance.

I would try to make it.
I know that I mentioned a meeting at Rockler Salem, NH. (tax free ) That offer is still open.
I like the idea of going to different locations. It is great to have a set offer by Steve and Woodcraft but it alsways nice to mix it up

I would like to have more input from everyone as to what we can do, there is no way the 5 of us can think of everything. I'm in for a trip, either as a March meeting or as a seperate day/weekend trip. Thanks for the idea, keep runnning with it.

Sounds like fun, I checked out their site and it looks like they have a lot of great stuff.

I like that we can get our hands dirty at the Woodcraft. However I can not always make every meeting so whatever works for everyone else is good.

BTW...Charlie, Alton and I have been chatting about doing something during the off months. We think there may be more local turners that would be willing to get together closer to home.

Hey.. don't feel bad about taking a 'job' away.. I still don't know what a
secretary does..and I've been one for months now.

I'm up for it. Like the others, I appreciate what Woodcraft and Steve do
for us.. but some of us wouldn't mind meeting more often than once every
other month and a change of scenery doesn't hurt. Besides, it might allow
some others to attend who can't make it down to Springfield MA . .I know
there's some who just can't make the trip.

And yes, we've been thinking about holding a get together .. unofficial.
First I'd have to get rid of the sawdust, hide the porn and buy a new
coffee maker.. maybe not in that order.

I talked with Rob, and he is happy to host us for a meeting.
As of now, it will be March 14th. Arrive any time after 9:30.
Yeah guys who travel a farther distance, you DO NOT have to be there then, just that anyone who wants to get there early is welcome to do so.
He has one lathe there, and I can bring two minis.
Rob would be happy to have us do a turning session there.
Can anyone else bring another mini?

Four lathes would make for a great time amongst us, along with Rob's great diatribe (sp?) on many of the woods form the opposite side of the world

Please give me a fair assessment of who is coming, so We can get some other things set up.

Either pm me or Neil (hope that is ok with you Neil) so we can try to get it all coordinated

I can bring my Jet Mini. Only problem is it has an out of round issue but that may be user. Turns fine with chuck but is out of round with mandrel.

Are you using a 60 degree live center on the tailstock when you use the mandrel? If not that may be part of the problem.

I have used the stock live center and a 60 that I got from Johnny CNC. I have also bought and tried 3 Standard 7mm mandrel, 1 8mm, 1 adjustable 7mm mandrel, the dead center from Johnny and my drill chuck.
I sent it to be fixed when it was still under warranty and they said they replaced the spindle. I dont think so. Same problem now.
The odd part is if i turn the mandrel I can normally find a point that is not out of round. I have even marked the spindle and taper on a couple and it does line up. Its annoying but it still works.
I made my first cigar pen this weekend. It was mad on that lathe with the mandrel because I was worried about mixing bushings and turnout real nice. Till I dropped the top and dented the finish right on the egde. I was going to refinish it but it was already 10pm so I just assembled it to see how the fit is. Factory bushings suck. Small bushing is .4600 in directions actual was .4615 next was off buy .002 one was off by .003 not alot and all can be sanded down to proper size or smaller for CA finish. It's jsut sad. Johnny will be getting an order once I start making more of these.

Just an update,
I was with Rob Doyle (the owner of Bad Bog Burls) and he was asking some far out questions like:
1) what were the meeting like? I answered that we get together for a little before the "official" meeting to swap stories, and blanks. Then we start and have any official club business, and then a demo or three with some question and answer sessions.
Does this sound about right?

2) He also inquired about a head-count for the reason of: He would like to know if he could also grill up some burgers, of maybe bbq a brisket or two, and provide a lunch for us.
I am going to ask if this is also something that you guys would like????
I will be asking for a headcount AFTER JANUARY if this is something we want to do.

3) Lastly (for now) Would you guys like a tour with an explanation of some of the woods, and characteristics, and some of the harvesting methods/reqts used in Australia?
I have been through this twice, and it is real informative, and Rob does an excellent job of this

Thanks

Jerry
