I've been lurking in here for a few weeks gathering information before jumping in and buying anything. Then, this weekend, I found an awesome deal on Craigslist. I went to look at a lathe with several chucks and tools, and instead found a virtually complete pen-turning studio. I scored a Jet mini-lathe, a sharpener with jig attachments, tools, chucks, books, mandrels, wood, and enough blanks and kits to keep me busy for a while. The gentleman who sold me all this was also kind enough to offer his help down the line if I ever needed pointers. Some deals are too good to be true, and some are too good to pass up, thankfully, this was one of the latter. Now all I need to do is re-arrange my garage and get turning.

I'm sure I'll have a million questions, but I promise I'll use the search feature first.

Welcome Jack, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. Be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/librar...en_turning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.
Have a look at the series of videos ed4copies has just posted showing how to complete a pen from drill to finish.

Thanks for all the welcomes! One thing I've always liked about woodworking is the sense of community. I rarely run across anyone who guards their techniques, and when I have, it's not usually worth keeping a secret. :)

Danny, I'm in Riverside, only a stone's throw from Ontario.

Welcome Jack. My daughter and her family just moved to San Diego. She loves it so far.

As Seamus noted, the vortex is deep; but the ride is a lot of fun.

Cool another local turner, we'll have to meet up some place at some time.

Let me know if I can help ya I've been doing the wood stuff for 5-6 years, just started with the pens a couple years ago, and am always learning.

My first batch of pens! A mix of slimlines, streamlines, and Sierras, with an assortment of woods and acrylics. Went crazy last week cutting, drilling, gluing, turning, and finishing. I started off with a few slimlines, which didn't make it into the photo because the wife and kids stole them. :) There are also a few "misfires" on the bench due to the learning curve. I'll have some pics of my workshop up after i clean up all the dust.
