Hello all. my name is Lorne, and I'm new(very) to latheworking. Never got around to using it in school. A friend started turning pens, and I fell in love with the idea of spending my time making shavings! I JUST purchased my 8 by 11 lathe, and some turning tools. Still need to set it up, get some more supplies and have some fun! I joined this site for help, inspiration, and community. i just hope I can do this! SEEMS easy. Thanks! (and thank you, JT!)

And from CenCal! Please let us know what gear you grabbed. Easy is a proportion of time and how much wood you have!

Welcome Lorne, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. Be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/librar...en_turning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.
Have a look at the series of videos ed4copies has just posted showing how to complete a pen from drill to finish.

welcome from the mitten. Turning is the easy part, trying to stop is the most difficult. You will want to try every kit and blank combo available...there's never enough time, so take your time, breathe, relax. Then you will want to try a metal lathe or kitless then the troubles get worse, but it is a fun ride.
