Hi all. I am so new that I don't even own a lathe yet. Leaning toward a Jet 1015vs when I can save enough of my "fixed income" to make the plunge. Also am thinking about carbide tools since they seem more newbie friendly and don't need sharping as much. Comments on these choices are welcomed. In the mean time, I will just lurk here and learn from you all.

Welcome from western NY State. I have the Jet 1014 VS and think it's a great lathe. They discontinued it and replaced it with the 1015. It should be an excellent choice.

I have both High Speed Steel (HSS) and carbide tools. I do 99.9% of all my turning with HSS.
