Hi all,

Although I've read a few of the articles on here, this is my first day of officially joining the board. When the weather is not conducive to skydiving, I spend my weekends in my wood shop, designing, building, turning, whatever the mood happens to strike at that time. I'm a newbie at all things wood oriented, but take classes in cabinetry at the local community college and signed up for a bowl turning course in May in Quakertown.

So, if any of ya'll are local and wouldn't mind a new girl picking your brain, drop me a note!

Welcome Jen from Harrisburg PA..

Thanks all... Randy, we're practically neighbors. I work in Harrisburg.

Yes, I have gotten hooked on this whole pen turning thing. I refer to the PSI, Rockler, and Grizzly catalogs as porn when they show up in the mail. My husband is getting accustomed to me acting like a kid at Christmas every time I order something new or get some scrap wood from friends :)

Welcome to the group from Mechanicsburg, Pa. You will find a great bunch of people that are willing to help with any questions or problems that you may have. Take it from me that this hobby is extremely addicting. There is a wealth of knowledge here, all you have to do is ask.

Welcome Jen, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. You mention that you have read some of the site, be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/library/general_reference/Getting_started_in_pen_turning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.
Have a look at the series of videos ed4copies has just posted showing how to complete a pen from drill to finish.

I've been all over the library here for the last year, only decided to join recently though. I had to laugh reading all the 'welcome, Jen' and 'Hi, Jen' posts, as well as the blatant references to addiction, and I feel like I'm at an AA meeting.... "Hi, my name is Jen, and I'm a pen turning addict" ;-)

The funny part is, when I got my lathe a couple of years ago, my husband suggested I try my hand at pens, and my off the cuff reply was 'why? That seems so boring, how interesting can a pen possibly be?". How little I knew!!!

Of course there's a story as to why I joined for real here... I am acting in Vagina Monologues Feb 21 at my favorite bar in Elizabethtown, PA. And I completely can't act. I'm the only non-actor in the group of us doing the performance, and money is going to be raised to fund Milagro House, which gets homeless women and kids off the streets, educated, and off welfare. So, I figured since I have nothing to add to the production acting-wise (my goal is to remember my lines), I would raise additional money. Every $100 donation is being rewarded with a custom made pen. So far, I have 12 pens to make :) I joined here to get some more ideas, as I want each one of the pens to be special for the folks that are donating.
