Hi All,

Pete here - I have just joined and am looking forward to sharing experiences (turning experiences) with everyone.

Ex-Royal Navy (27+ years) emigrated to Canada with Canadian wife in 1991 and have worked in industry as Electronic Warfare specialist ever since. Wife is a nurse working in a local hospital when she isn't looking after me.

Have enjoyed various woodworking activies for many years but have turned to turning in the last few years. In addition to pens and pencils I turn Bottle Stoppers, watches, hourglasses, chess pieces, etc.

First question if I may - anyone north of the border know where I can acquire "Cast-a-kit" or similar? This product is available from Penn State Industries but they can't ship across the border unfortunately. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Look forward to hearing from you all.

Welcome from Michigan! :biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:
My grandfather was born in Montreal and my Uncle served in the Canadian Army during WW2. Thanks for using you time to defend the freedom of your homeland!

Hi Jeff,

Burritts Rapids is on the Rideau River approximately midway between Kemptville and Merrickville from an East/West perspective and midway between Brockville and Ottawa in a North/West perspective.

Where is Mount Forest?

Regards,

Pete

Welcome Pete, Nice to have you.
a few of our Canadian members come to mind. IAP usernames
jharvey and workingforwood wood-of-1kind you might want to do a member search for them on your source question.
I have been working with a couple of them on the issue of not being able to buy things from the US. I have been shocked at how many suppliers will not ship across the border. I'm starting to think somebody needs to introduce them to a little thing called Click and Ship.
Also keep an eye on the group buy forum. most members have no problem mailing items to Canada and you get a discount that helps offset the additional postage etc.
Cast a kit might present a problem by being a band product. I've never tried to ship anything with chemicals of any kind involved.

Thanks Daniel,

I will certainly take your advice and look up those guys and keep an eye on the forums.

You are right - the problem is not with PSI but the content of the product and shipping across the border. It's the same story with anything inflammable - luckily I have found suppliers in Canada for my favorite polishes etc but have so far drawn a blank with Cast-a-kit.

Thanks again,

Pete

Hi Taff,

Small world huh? I know Jeff (or should I say knew - in his days in EW in the RN).

Know the Pompey (and Denmead) area well - once lived in Cosham and then Waterlooville.

Thanks for the welcome and best wishes to you and yours for the holidays.

The PSI kit's casting resin is polyester resin. Polyester resin should be available in Canada. Search for Silmar 41 clear casting resin. I have a friend in Nova Scotia who casts and I'll ask where he gets his resin.
Do a good turn daily!

Pete,
Welcome to the group. I think that if you can find a company in Canada that makes fiberglass products then you can get the resin and colors. The other parts to the kit most likely could be picket up at the hardware store. (i.e. corks, fishing weights, gloves, cheep measuring cup, ...) Good luck and if you can't find the stuff you need let me know and we can arrange something.
God Bless,
Eric

Slimar41 can be bought from US Composites and they will ship across the boarder, but choose fedex. UPS gives you the feeling that you should have bought a couple bottles of vodka and downed them before you took delivery.

Thanks Cindy,

Thanks to this site I already have several leads to find the product I seek.

How is your beautiful city of San Fran - visited there back in the early 70's during "British week" when I was serving in HMS BLAKE. Having visited most parts of the world during my days in the RN I have to say that I, and most others on the good ship BLAKE found your city to be one of the most hospitable and welcoming places to visit in the world.

Kind regards,

Pete

Many thanks Eric - I will certainly let you know how I get on - to this point I haven't considered making it up myself but sounds like you know what you are doing so I may have to take you up on your offer of HELP. Actually it sounds kinda fun.

Best wishes to you and yours.
