Hi guys and gals. Great site! I am learning a lot and I am glad this site is here.

I have some kits and tools arriving soon and cant wait to get started.

Even though I havent started; im thinking of some interesting things to try. One of them is as follows and I wonder if anyone has a picture of what it may look like:

I was thinking of using a bandsaw to cut 45° "notches" around a blank (maple) and then cut pieces of darker wood, the size of the notch, and glue them in place. it should make a loose spiral around the pen when turned.

I am certain once i make my first pen that this will seem like a far future project, so i am curious to see if someone has done something similar to give me something to look forward to.

Thanks to all that contribute their experiences.

Eric

Welcome Eric, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. You mention that you have read some of the site, be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/library/general_reference/Getting_started_in_pen_turning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.
Have a look at the series of videos ed4copies has just posted showing how to complete a pen from drill to finish.

Welcome, Eric! There are quite a few people doing segmented work. Take a look at the Show Off Your Pens forum and you'll likely see something similar to your idea.

Hello my name is Ken, and I'm a pen turner, Although I keep trying, I can't seem to get past step 1, I doubt if I'll ever make it to 12. (not really sure I want to)
Have a great time, and your idea will work, a lot can be done by altering the rotation of the blank like instead of cutting the sides 1-2-3-4, in that order alter the cutting sequence to like 1-4-2-3 and just keep experimenting, it's similar to doing a Celtic knot.
