I am a newer pen turner. I had bought a old Shopsmith last summer as an all around tool in my small house fix up shop and was looking for some other ways to use it. I saw an ad for a pen turning mandrel kit for it and purchased it. Cut some blanks out of some pine boards I had and proceeded to try to turn them into a pen. I had purchased a couple slimline kits over the internet and proceeded to make a pen. It came out OK and it was a start. Since then I have purchased a small Harbor Freight mini lathe with an adapter for a 1-8 mandrel. Granted that it is not a high end machine but it does the job just fine for me at this point in my pen turning career. Since that first pen I have turned some others with varying degrees of success. It all comes with practice and I try to practice as much as I can. As soon as I figure out how to post pictures I will put some up.
Again thanks for a great group of hobbyist.
Jack

Hi Jack, welcome aboard.

There's a good woodworking club in Ocala called The Cracker Workshop.
They meet in the Annex Building of the First Baptist Chruch,
2801 SE Maricamp Road, Ocala, Florida 3447
The club meets regularly the second Tuesday of each month starting at 7:30 PM
I'd bet you'd enjoy the club. They've got a number of fine turners.
