Hi all. I'm retired and for several years I've puttered at woodworking in my garage/shop. I've never used a lathe. I mostly make boxes etc. This forum looks like a great resource.

I recently decided to try pen turning for three maun reasons: 1) I never throw out my nicely figured cutoffs. 2) I love the idea of starting and finishing a cool project in the same day. 3) Pen turning looks like lots of fun!

Gonna buy an inexpensive midi lathe this weekend and order some kind of pen making starter kit too. Can't wait too start.

Greetings from nearby Eastvale/Norco CA. You'll love making pens, it's quite addictive. I tried to start out on the cheap with a Harbor Freight Mini lathe, but quickly wound up returning it for a much better Rikon 70-100. Plenty of good advice on this site, stuff I wished I'd read before buying anything! Check out the library.
