Wow, what an honor to be a member! I have been turning pens now since oh gosh...1 month now. I am learning and selling like crazy at the same time. I use perhaps the rarest wood there is. Being retired from the United States Submarine Force I manage to acquire the only wooden parts of a modern Nuclear Submarine which is rock maple from the battery well.
This wood is used to support and cushion the 126, 1-ton battery cells. To prevent friction the wood is boiled in wax for 48 hours.
For the turner, it has good and bad points. The wax clogs tools, and sandpaper last but a few seconds before it is also clogged. However, there is little finish work to do as the wax provides a built-in finish that will polish to a nice luster with only a bit of 0000 steel wool.
Great being here amongst the best!!
