I have been lurking for sometime now and felt it was time to join. This site has helped me spend more money than I thought was possible but what a joy it has been to make my own pens. I have been at it for a few months now and have made pens primarily as gifts and personal use. What I am really wanting to do is cast my own blanks. Something about one of a kind just sounds awesome.

Turning pens has also given me the confidence to make duck calls. Living in one of the best flyways it is fun to make one and watch it in action. Here duck duck duck.

I think my next stop after my intro will be the Northern California Chapter of IAP. Thank you and I look forward to sharing.

Welcome. From the sound of it, you've got "it" bad. Pens, casting, and duck calls...I'm afraid you're too far gone to be saved. Luckily, you've found the right place.

Welcome Eric, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. Be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/library/general_reference/Getting_started_in_pen_turning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.
Have a look at the series of videos ed4copies has just posted showing how to complete a pen from drill to finish.

Thank you for the warm welcome it is very encouraging. Can't wait to post some work.

To say I have it bad may be an understatement. I am already asking/begging for a bigger lathe. I wonder if there is information on this site to convince your wife you need, not want, to buy a lathe that is the cost of a small automobile. Oh and it will take up a spot in the garage.
