Hello, I'm Jim. As the title says I am indeed new to turning...I don't even have a lathe yet. I have been interested in wood turning since wood shop in high school just never took the plunge. A couple of weeks ago I was talking to someone at work that I discovered was doing alot of pen turning...he is maxman400. After talking with Max for awhile and doing some research online I decided to get into pen tuning. Now all I need is everything.:eek: I welcome all advise that I can get. I've seen some really nice pens on here already, I hope you won't mind if I borrow some of your ideas once I do start turning. I look forward from learing something fom everyone and seeing some truly great pens.

Welcome aboard. If you think you might nit want to do this back out now cause you will not be able to once you make your first pen. It becomes an addiction after that. A good one I must say. There are many good folks on here that will help guide you. Don't be afraid to ask and check out the library it is full if good articles

Welcome Jim! I was in that same boat about 4 or 5 months ago. Got my lathe and have done 22 pens so far.

Max even has the 9th (or so) pen I made as part of our PITH.

Welcome Jim, be sure to check the library for tutorials which will answer a great many questions you might have. The Advanced Pen Making section has some good stuff in it as well so take some time to look through that. I can honestly say that the IAP is one of the best places to find inspiration! I see amazing things every day posted here that pushes me to change the way I look at both pens and material used. You can have loads of fun with wood, but look at all the cool stuff that people cast and turn into pens. Have fun and ask loads of questions...the members here are some of the finest people you'll type/talk to and are always willing to assist.

Welcome Jim, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. Be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/library/general_reference/Getting_started_in_pen_turning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.

Thank you to all for the warm welcome. Just ordered my lathe this morning Rikon 70-100 from sears for 370 total. Not to bad I though since i didn't have to pay for shipping.

And so it begins.....

Welcome from Va. Jim. I got curious about pen turnig about a month ago. I went to a WoodCraft store about 50 miles from my home to check on some supplies. There happened to be a few guys there turning "pens for troops". I watched them for about 45 mins and I was hooked! I already had a lathe so I bought about $90 in materials to get started. I made 2 pens and a co-worker wanted to buy 4 as Xmas gifts. I finished 3 and my Lathe broke down :eek: so I borrowed a friends to make #4. I have since bought a new midi lathe and love it!
