It turns out that there is a place right near here in Livermore, ACP Composite, that sells carbon fiber sleeves. And they are pretty inexpensive - about $1.50 per foot. I'm going to go over there tomorrow and buy a few feet so we can experiment with putting the sleeves on the tubes and trying our hand at watch parts. I'm going to the Alameda Antique faire this weekend - so I'll see if I can pick up some more watches to take apart. Not that I'll have time...

Martin and All,
I'll bring a Veggie platter, dip and some Ice Tea for the meeting on the 15th. Topics look great with plenty of advance preparation. There was a post in the Group Buy section of IAP about securing some Tap and Die sets, does this happen very often, or should we join in?

Bill, thanks for jumping in and I"ll add your items to the list. sounds good.
Concerning tap and die sets... It's good to know what your getting into prior to diving in (although that's a lesson I haven't learned) If there is time, maybe absorb info from our get together and go from there. Maybe others from the group will want to jump in on that as well.

ACP Composites in Livermore has carbon fiber braided sleeves at $1.50 per foot. Open Mon -Fri 9 to 5.
The half inch (.50) sleeves fit most tubes, I have read.
I am going to get over there on Friday and pick up a few feet for the meeting.
Google them for their address.

Sounds like it will be a great meeting. I will bring chips and a desert.

Also, I will have access to a very large amount of old watch parts if anyone is interested.

Thank you Darci!
Bottled water works for me. Suggestions from others?
The canopy will be great, as my garage is rather small.

You can arrive as early as 9am
At 10am we will start with the stabilizing of blanks, since that takes a while.

Reminder to all: If you want to sharpen a few of your most used drill bits... I have a Drill Doctor.

I was waiting to see how the food flushed out. I can bring something for lunch. Let me know what you would like.

By the way, look at the latest additions to the mustard monster.

The accessory lights for the 4224B, and the mobile base from Packard, also for the 4224B. I had to take the mobile base to a metal shop for modification, but it sure is nice to be able to wheel the lathe out to the middle of the garage, and then put it back when it comes time to park the car.

Sadly my oven is on the fritz, so i cannot bring brownies. :( so we will bring drinks... any preferences?

And our ez up canopy

Diet Pepsi and Diet Rootbeer are what I normally drink. But whatever.

Nice setup Jim. I am looking to add lights to my Grizzly monster next. Wheels would be nice but I have to figure out how. Just putting wheels under it raises it up too much.

If anyone wants to try their hand (or share their expertise) at watch part pens...
I will have Sierra tubes and carbon fiber sleeves.

If you have watches you want to take apart, I have all the tools for that.
I don't have watch parts for everyone - so BYOWP (bring your own watch parts) or a watch to disassemble.

For those who have done this (I have never made a watch part pen) bring your experience and teach us how!

Well, here's a funny little story.

I have talked about and posted about the meeting so much that I actually convinced myself that it is tomorrow(8th) (it's not). I left a note for my teenagers to help clean the house and the garage is usable... and then I realized we still have another week! I'm glad for it. It will give me a chance to try doing a watch part pen this week and it has motivated me. And the house is clean. : )

So, we still have a whole week. I'll see everyone on the 15th of August.
Unfortunately the weather will be hotter in a week, but we'll live. You can arrive as early as 9am. Safe travels for those driving from afar. PM me if you have any questions.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Topics:

*Stabilizing with the Cactus Juice stabilizer.

*Kitless Pens - just the basics that I'm trying to figure out. (I will also have closed end mandrels out if we want to discuss closed end)

*Watch part pens - Bring your experience and creations. I'm just learning

*Spheres - perhaps a discussion on techniques - maybe a demo

You can bring drill bits if you want to use my Drill Doctor for sharpening.
I think with all the other things people are bringing (pop up tent, folding chairs, fans, etc...) we should be in good shape.
