It was great seeing some familiar faces and some new faces today! Plus more pens, more trading blanks and a great PR casting demo by Mick (I expect to see pics of those blanks posted soon, Mick!).

Herewith is some photographic evidence of the meeting:

The group breathlessly watching Mick's PR demo.

Mick working his magic while Rojo22 in the background catches up with his March madness brackets.

IAP 011.jpg
Mick mixed a couple pair of colors, red & black to match the UGA colors, and black and gold to match the North Avenue Trade School colors (as one wag observed, one's a football team with a school and one's a school with a football team...).

IAP 022.jpg
There was plenty of shop talk going on the rest of the time. Far right, Skye chats with a newcomer named John.

Good times...

where had by some (me at least!). I want to take the opportunity to thank Skye, Rojo22, and Woodcraft for the opportunity to meet and talk to some great penmakers. The demo by Mick was just what I needed to push me over the line to try it myself.

Thanks all for the good time!

Alright, and another GREAT turn out for the Southeast Chapter! At the height of the meeting, we had 50+ folks held in rapt attention by none other than internationally acclaimed PR guy MICK! I cannot thank MICK enough for his generous sharing of his knowledge and experience. I learned a ton, and let me tell you, we were worried that MICK would be able to talk for an hour...LOL.....Again, this is what it is all about, and what makes this group so great, the sharing of experience and knowledge without all the fuss!

I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of my better half in taking a great number of photos of todays event. She did a great job!

We have pictures of Several locals in the Gwinnette Woodworking club show up and are visible in the first photo, along with Mark (me2cyclops) looking for the Chittam burl blank in the bottom of the box....

We even had some folks drive in from South Carolina! Bruce (fiferb) is in the second shot just coming through the door! We even had people MOVE to the Southeast just because our meetings are so great...LOL....Dan (Gruntster) moved into the area and was able to come to the meeting!

We have various kits from Davinci and Papaturner...great stuff guys....

Even more good stuff!

Skye brought enough blanks to furnish an army of pen turners! Cant beat the price right?

Not sure who this beautiful "worthless casting" is? Anyone want to claim it?

The last picture is folks milling around.....looks like the joke started out "So this penguin goes into a bar......"

Robert, Thanks for the photos. This meet was even greater than the first. It was an absolute pleasure to meet and to see all the folk. Already looking forward to the next.
I don`t know if Woodcraft uses the site or not but we all owe them a great big Thank You!
Thanks to Mick for the great demo, now I suppose I`ll have to put that knowledge to work.

Ok some interesting facts about todays meeting.....1700.2 miles was the posted total for those who put mileage down for the ride to the meeting!

Skye Maloney (215) miles to the meeting!
Bob Stoughton (241.2) miles to the meeting!
Mike Hulsey (180) miles to the meeting!
Bruce Fifer (167) miles to the meeting!
George Curran (90) miles to the meeting!

I want to thank all of those folks for braving the road warrior regiment to make it to the meeting! It wouldnt have been half as fun without you guys!

Second thing, if you had fun, and enjoyed the meeting, please take a moment to thank the owner of the Woodcraft we met in. Steve Quehl and his staff have been AWESOME in their support of the Southeast Chapter. Please send an email to Steve at the store thanking him for a great time and use of the facilities at :

squehl(at)woodcraftatl(dot)com

(this is the "camoflaged" version of his email. Relate the parenthisized words into the normal symbols for the "real" address) If you are confused by this, send me an email, and I will email you the correct address........

ok and the roll call included (if you were supposed to be at the library, or doing the honey-do-list, I could have made a mistake in reading the list of attendees....LOL)

Charles Jackson (CBJAX), Perry Bridges (Papaturner), Skye Maloney (SKYE), Bob Stoughton (RSTOUGHT), Mel Williams, Mike Hulsey (MICK), Dan Burris (GRUNTSTER), Ben Brown (DAVINCI27), Bruce Maday, Steve Mellott (STEVE 123), Bruce Fifer (FIFERB), Jerry Johnson (CTHRU), Howard Julian, Steve Busey (SRB), Fred Henderson (FRED), Andy (TWOOFAKIND), Charlie Long, Kent Wilson (REDDWIL), George Curran (GCURRAN), Mark Pirkle (ME2CYCLOPS), Harry Robinson, Will Gallagher (WRG813), Dave Goddard, Bob Snee, Jim Preston, Jonathan Pendley, Ron Hampton, Travis Smith (GTS GARNETT), Bobby Branch, Jim Myrick, and a host of others that will remain anonymous because they were supposed to be at the library or doing the honey-do-list.....

I also want to add that today was a great turnout. It really means a lot to be able to finally meet folks from the Forum and to actually have a face to go with a name. We all had a great time socializing and carrying on some great conversations.

The pouring demo by Mick was right on and answered many folks questions. I believe most were quite impressed with the results ... school or nor school. team or not team the blanks were quite nice. Even the PR 'smell' was not all that overbearing (maybe that's because I was near the door though).

Thanks to Steve, Dave, and the rest of the Woodcraft staff for supporting the chapter and allowing us the generous use of the facilities and making everyone feel right at home.

Great meeting everyone and excellent pens, bowls, etc. that were on display.

The Beall Pen Wizard was a big conversation piece for many of us as we tried to make heads or tails out of all the gears and movements. Thanks for bringing the device to the meeting as I do believe that was a very nice gesture.

See ya all next time and for those that missed this meeting be sure and get on over to the next one.

Wow!

That's a bunch of pictures of what looks like an old drunk guy...lol
I hope I didn't bore you or talk your ears off. I've enjoyed our meetings very much because I've not been able to connect to many turners in my area. We've got a great group of guys and I hope this keeps getting bigger and bigger. Thanks for all the kind words. My wife saw the pictures and read the comments and asked me if my head fit inside the truck as i left....lol
I hope I'm not overstepping my bounds but Robert and I were talking after the meeting about other demos that could be put on and I mentioned that since we've got a good deal of time we could start posting ideas here and maybe have different people that may have certain skills and talents to suggest a few things.
A few things that come to mind are:

1. Customizing slimlines, centerbands and such
2. Care and feeding of fountain pens.(I'd love to learn to reshape a nib)
3. Drilling on the lathe
4. Segmenting blanks

It was great to see everybody and meet some more of you. I had a great time and can't wait for the next one. There were some beautiful pens there and I came home with some great ideas for things to try. I suggested to Robert that we might try a chapter pen swap before the next one. Is anybody interested? if so maybe this is osmething we can try to work out between now and the next meeting.

As for things I'd like to see:

  1. Hidden/Recessed Clips
  2. Worthless Wood Casting
  3. Advanced Segmenting

I got home about 6:30 this evening after stopping at the Outlet Mall on I85. After making my wife spend all day with me looking at pens I had to give her time to do her thing.

It was great meeting everyone and sharing ideas. I hope I can make it to the next one and would like to invite everyone to the meeting we're having in Columbia on the first Saturday in April or May. We'd love to have you!

I should have taken some more pics, didn't even think about it.

Do we have any more so we can get a good name-to-face thing happening?

I like the idea of the WW, but I don't think you can really do it justice in a few hours time. To really do it right you need to go into the wood, what's best, bark/barkless, then the color mix, then pouring, then the other half of it would be the turning, which you won't be able to do.

Case in point: I still want to see how the blanks from the demo turned out!

Skye, RoJo has the blanks I poured in the ice cube trays. He's gonna give them out next meeting. PM me your address and I'll stick a couple of the square ones in the mail to you.

I popped the "pour" demo blanks out of the molds this afternoon, curiosity got the better of me. They all came out with relative ease, and they are a little "sticky" on the outside, but solid as rocks. I will take a picture of them and post them on here in a few days. We will make these demo blanks the door prizes for the next meeting to be given away!
