Default Pen Photography contest rules.

We will have the shop photo contest along with the Pen photo contest again this year. Robert Sherlok will be running both. Here are the rules for the Pen Photo contest. The pen photo contest will be published at the first of February.

Default 2017 Pen Photography Contest
DRAFT

Welcome to the 2017 IAP 13th Birthday Bash Pen Photography Contest.

The goal of the Pen Photography Contest is to have fun while showing your photography skills and pushing yourself to expand your knowledge and experience in displaying your pens for the world to see.

How to...The Quick and Easy:
Turn a Pen
Take a picture of the pen
Submit a picture of the pen to IAP by Feb XX, 2017
Win Prizes!
Continue reading for all the specifics...

Click here for the Official Pen Photography entry form. Please continue to read below for all of the rules and procedures.

These contest rules build upon the General Rules of 2017 IAP 13th Birthday Bash Universal Contest Rules. Please familiarize yourself with those rules in addition to the rules below specific to the Pen Photography Contest.

Photo Subject:
Photos must at minimum contain one pen. The pen or pens in your photo must have been made by you...basically if you created (or bought) the blank, turned the blank, and then created a pen from the blank, you are good to go.

THE PEN OR PENS USED IN YOUR PHOTOS MUST NOT HAVE BEEN SHOWN PUBLICLY HERE ON THE IAP OR ANY OTHER SITE (INCLUDING FACEBOOK) PRIOR TO ENTRY OR BEFORE THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THIS CONTEST WINNERS. Please be aware that this rule means that these pens cannot be entered in any other IAP 13th Birthday Bash Contests.

Photography work:
All photography work submitted must be done by you. Photos can be from any date and do not have to be taken specifically for the contest, as long as the photo / pen has not been shown publicly.

Image Modifications:
Minor digital enhancement is permitted (see below), but images that have been significantly modified or appear unnatural will be disqualified.
Permitted Modifications:
Images may be cropped and rotated as necessary.
Red-eye removal and spot editing to remove minor dust, etc. (Please be careful not to go too far, see Not Permitted #1)
One-step enhancement (such as "AutoFix", "QuickFix", "Auto Levels", etc.)
Use of filters to sharpen, soften, blur, despeckle, or remove noise.
Use of corrective functions to improve the natural appearance of the image, such as levels, contrast, brightness, curves, intensity, tone, hue, saturation, lightness, value, color balance, and tint.
Not Permitted:
Manipulation or editing to hide flaws in the fit, finish, materials, composition or lighting.
Borders, frames, or textures added to images.
Watermarks, signatures, logos or copyright notices added to images. (logos, etc. on items in the photo are permitted)
Adding or replacing significant elements in an image.

Photo Formats:
Digital images should be submitted using the Official Entry Form. File size must be less than 256K per image. Images may be no larger than 960 pixels in either width or height but can be any proportion (i.e. vertical, horizontal, or square) within that size. Any images submitted larger than that will be resized down. The IAP and BASH Organizers will not be responsible for any loss in image quality because of this. Smaller images will not be resized and will be displayed at the size they were submitted. Entries may be color or black & white digital images only and should be submitted in either JPG (JPEG) or PNG format.

Ownership/Use Rights:
Photographers retain the copyright to their photographs. By entering the contest, photographers agree to have their submitted photograph displayed on the IAP website without any fee or other form of compensation. Photographers agree that IAP may display winning photos in a "past winners" photo gallery and retain copies of the photograph for promotional purposes. Photos will be credited to the photographer.

How to Enter:
Each IAP Member may submit only ONE photo to this contest. Photos need to be submitted through the Official Entry Form (The 2017 IAP Photo Challenge) and NOT POSTED HERE OR ANYWHERE ELSE ON THE FORUM / INTERNET. Your IAP username, E-Mail address, and First and Last Name are required on the entry form but I highly suggest that you include the other fields so that it will make it easier to send you your prizes if you win! All personal information will be kept strictly confidential (even from me!!) and will only be accessible to members of the IAP Birthday Bash necessary to administer and distribute prizes.
Be sure to select the correct category ("Pen Photography") on your submission, as the same entry form is being used for several contests.
Entries will be accepted starting (Feb. 1st) but must be received by (February 17, 2017), 11:59 PM PST to be eligible.

Judging:
** February 20, 2017: Preliminary polls will be posted of all entries to be voted on by the entire IAP membership. If there are more than 10 entries, there will be several polls created so that each poll contains no more than 10 entries. The order of photos in the polls will be random. Preliminary voting will be open until (February 23, 2017) 11:59 PM PST.

** (February 24, 2017) a final poll will be posted with the top top 10 photos by votes from all preliminary polls. Final voting will be open until (February 27, 2017) 11:59 PM PST. In the event of 10 or less total entries are received, only one poll will be made on (February 20, 2017) and voting will be open until (February 23, 2017) 11:59 PM PST.

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS CONTEST IS NOT OVER UNTIL THE RESULTS OF THE FINAL POLL ARE MADE PUBLIC!! As such you should not post your photo or any other information on this site or any others that would identify your photo to other members. Promoting your entry to other members in any way (in person, Private Message, E-Mail, Phone, posting pleas for votes) is strictly prohibited and will result in disqualification.

Prizes will be awarded as follows:
1st Place:
2nd Place:
3rd Place:

From this description I'm assuming that RAW photos (Captured then tuned) aren't allowed correct?

You have to email or use an entry form to enter them. So there are restrictions on the size of the file you can submit. There are rules explaining what you can submit under "photo formats" in the rules above.

Does it have to be the finished pen or can it be the process of turning the pen? Already had a different shop life photo ready for submission but, I suppose I could submit it in that category.
Thanks, Jeff

I think RAW to JPG conversion should be fine - the controls around that strike me as in keeping with the rules (color balance, levels, etc. are allowed to be adjusted), and aren't that different than the on camera settings that govern how it's done for you when you're not shooting raw.

Unrelated to RAW, but I assume various forms of composting (merging of multiple images - HDR, Focus Stacking, etc.) would not be allowed, whether they are done with a camera setting or in post-processing.

As long as the file format submitted is in *.jpg or *.png, using RAW when actually taking the photo is fine. Please follow the size and dimensions (File size must be less than 256K per image. Images may be no larger than 960 pixels in either width or height but can be any proportion (i.e. vertical, horizontal, or square) within that size) and allowable image modifications.

Please have the photograph be of a finished pen. Although one of the underlying ideas of the photo contest is to highlight photography skills, I feel a completed pen is also important as anything but has the potential of introducing too many 'is that a pen' variables when a picture could be taken at different stages of the pen creation.
