Ebonite with my bolt action design

The casing challenge is something designed to celebrate Independance Day.

Since this in July 4 we might as well let the celebration begin:)

Over all length 5 inches.

A little over two weeks to go. Some very nice pens have been submitted as well. I hope some of the others are just procrastinating until the end:biggrin:

Here are pictures of my casing challenge pen. Thanks to Eric Rassmussen from Little River Crafts for the pen kit and to a cousin of my wife that provided the antler. This pen is already sold to that cousin for a gift to her son who is an AVID hunter.
Enjoy and all comments and criticisms are appreciated.

.50 Cal or .308?

A new turner at 7 months, This is my first entry into any contest. It's a .50 cal once fired casing, powder coated, embellished with a 2013 Nickel to celebrate Independence day. This soldered on nickel has the author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson, on the "heads" side(since 1938).

The .50 caliber pen functions as a desk pen with the casing actually being the holder. Inside is a .308 nickel casing pen in ebony with red, white, and blue acrylic. The ebony is tipped with a nose of Padauk. The top is finished with CA.

No kit involved, as I built the blank, drilled the casings, drilled the bullet, soldered the .308, soldered the .50 & Nickel, powder coated the shells, and finished the pen myself.

I hope you enjoy!

My Entry, "Short and Stubbie".

the shell casing is a .300 Winchester Short Magnum.
the bullet is a 168 grain Berger Bullet
the shell and bullet were "blackened" with Birchwood Casey Brass Black.

the top is rattlesnake skin cast in clear resin.

the finial and clip are from a black enamel 7mm kit.

the transmission is a 7mm twist with a cross style refill

Why not a Casing Fountain Pen???

I thought I would head a slightly different direction for this.

This is a fountain pen that uses a once fired 30.06 as the section. The nib is made by Schmidt. The lip on the nib assembly extends slightly over the edge of the casing to provide an easy grip location for writing. The oversized body provides the proper balance to the pen. The body threads are 14mm.

The pen writes surprisingly well.

Roller-Ball-Ammo-Pen

I planned to try out a couple of new cartridge pen ideas, but work commitments, family obligations, and illness consumed all of July. So, instead, I used the last day of the month to knock-out this pen.

I had to simplify the design considerably to get it done in time, but here it is:

All the visible brass parts are from cut shellcases. I used 300 WinMag, 30-06 Spg, 7.62 NATO and 5.56 NATO caliber brass. The nosecone is a mil-spec .224 55g FMJ (a.k.a. "ball") bullet. The grip section unscrews to replace the standard rollerball refill. The wood is cocobolo, which always reminds me of a high-end gunstock.

Before anybody worries, the primers are not live. I used empty primer cups in the cap, finial, and clip decoration.

I hope you like it,
Eric
