Default Xuns (end blown flutes) for a Family of 5

More slow turning...

The Xun is the earliest known end blown vessel flute, dating back to the stone age in China, falling into final form and pentatonic tuning for palace orchestral music within the Shang Dynasty (1766-1122BC).

This commission was for 5 hand thrown harmoniously tuned porcelain Xuns for a musical family of 5. The challenge is to turn the thin-walled vessel slowly on the potter's wheel with just the right amount of water in order to create an acoustically proper and correctly tuned form, allowing for 10% post-kiln firing shrinkage - lots of trial and error. The holes are cut when the clay is leather-hard, positioned to play pentatonic intervals. Airbrush glazed outdoors (with a fan and a respirator mask), bisque fired, lightly clear glazed, then final fired at cone 6. Fun project, happy family:

I continue to enjoy slow turning of musical mud - deeply indebted to the musical ceramics Master, Barry Hall.

Happy Tuesday - Bob
