It looks a bit too straight for oak, but maybe that's just based on the trees I've seen in this area. Regardless, of what it is, I would jump on the free offer - looks like some great figured & colored heart wood in that tree.

Hi from 2 hours north. Looks like red oak to me. Nice wood for benches, cabinets, wood trim in your house, etc. Probably not the most dramatic for pens, but still a nice wood. Be aware that red oak grain is a little more open than, say, maple.

But the price is right!
