What can I do to fix the tear out on a bowl. I don't want to sand it to get rid of it because it will make my side too thin. I am looking for a fix that would still be food safe.

I have found this method to help alot with end grain tearout near the end of the bowl turning process. Turn your bowl close to the finished size using very sharp tools then give the bowl a very light coat of shellac ( I use Zinsser Bullseye shellac in a rattle can from Lowes ). Sharpen your tools again and then use a sheer cuts to finish the bowl.

I might suggest sanding (about 220 grit) until you have about a teaspoon of dust and then add thin CA glue and with lathe at SLOW speed spread the slurrry over the tear out area then wet sand with the CA. Let cure for about an hour then sand and finish.
Two cautions wear gloves and have good ventalitation
