Yes Dan, you are right. But the investment of platinum is "arguably" negligible. But the notion of gifting platinum is, well, very nice to me! :)

Both platinum and rhodium are relatively easy to plate. You might try it yourself, or try a local jeweler.
I looked superficially into chrome plating in the past, but it was associated with a myriad of toxic substances, is rhodium more feasible for a person to do?

In general you don't want to plate over chrome. In most cases I would strip the existing plating prior to Rhodium plating. Here is one system. Keep in mind Rhoduim is NOT CHEAP!

For occasional hobby plating batteries can be used for a power source.

Do your research first. It is really very easy to do. Many of the chemicals are "not nice" but with reasonable care, you should be fine.
