This is a small letter opener in the style of a "Hôchô" Japanese kitchen Knife.
The blade is made from a core of light wood and coated with sevral layers of urushi lacquer and iron powder, then gound and polished. The handle Ebonite with a Urushi coating "Negoro-Nuri". The techniques imitating metal is called "Kinsoku Mitateai. It is quite stabile

Superb craftsmanship on this letter opener! If you had not told us the blade was wood, we wouldn't have known. Also, the wooden blade does not add the weight of a metal blade.
