I had to go against some of you advice since I was specifically asked to make at least one bowl from the red oak barstool. They know that it will not be food safe. Still have not decided what to do with the other seat. This bowl/platter is 14" in diameter and 1 3/4" tall.

Cody,
That is a beautiful piece of work... I like the grain pattern in Red Oak... I've only had a few pieces to turn, but has always looked good when finished.... as for food safe, it should be okay for dry foods... and if you got a good seal on the grain with your sanding sealer or polyurethane finish, should be okay for liquids... the wood is very porous in its unfinished state... so much so that I had difficulties holding it on a vacuum chuck. 'Course my vacuum chuck is homemade and I use my shop vac to create the vacuum....

Good job!!

I do not use a vacuum chuck. I glue on a waste block and then part it off when I am done with the rest of the bowl.
