I'm using Woodcraft's hawk nose ice cream scoop kit. The blank is stabilized burr oak cast in allumilite. I'm drilling into the stabilized wood only however.

With normal wood I use a 9/16 brad point bit and insert a metal threaded insert so the scoop can be removed for cleaning without getting the wood wet.

Today however I found the drilling to be extremely difficult and inserting the threaded insert impossible. It would twist off line even with pressure on the bolt used to put the insert in.

I'm wondering if I should use a 5/8 bit or even 11/16 bit or simply forget the threaded insert and glue the scoop in?

Anyone have experience with this? Thanks for any help or suggestions you can give.
