Here is a piece I recently finished. The piece is 6 inches tall - The sphere is 3 inches in Dia. with a 1/8th wall thickness. The piece was turned from a solid piece of Amboyna Burl. If you are looking at the piece in person from about 8 feet away the stem from the base seems to disappear giving the appearance that the sphere is floating above the base.

I used a miniature version of an Ellsworth grind with extra-long wings to shape the sphere. As for the hollowing I used a small boring bar with carbide cutter, it has a second bar for support on the tool rest. My regular hollowing system is temporarily out of order waiting on some replacement parts. Everything was done slowly by feel; normally I have help from a laser guide.
